Meet your next of kiln

I have been pushing the boundaries of clay for over three decades in a highly personalized process from crafting clay to final firing.  My creations, techniques and glazes have evolved over the years to represent a truly distinct style.  I begin by manipulating a spinning lump of clay until the basic form is lifted from the wheel for trimming and assessment.  The pots are preliminarily kiln fired to 1750 degrees F.  This process solidifies the clay while leaving it porous for the next stage of glazing.

The determining elements of the final product converge in the critical last firing inside the on-site gas kiln at Springwood Pottery in rural Frazee, MN.  In order to develop the glazes to the vibrant depth of color seen in the finished creations, many factors must reach a state of complex equilibrium.  The smoky atmosphere in the kiln during the final firing contributes to the unique look of each pot.

Every kiln opening is a cause for celebration.  The excitement and anticipation of cracking the door to catch the first glimpse of freshly fired pots is an occasion only experienced first hand.  I invite you to visit the pottery and enjoy this unique event.  Invitations are at short notice depending on weather conditions.
